Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro: 07. Dolaylı Doppleganger / 07. Indirect Doppleganger

07. Dolaylı Doppleganger*

Benim kendi Isshi Mimibukuro meslektaşımın bir deneyimi.

Asaya Loft'taki son yılın sonundaki etkinlikten sonra olmuştu. O, Yamanote Line'in ilk kalkışındaki arabalardan birinin içindeydi.

<Koç'un Övgüsü>

English:

An experience from my own Isshi Mimibukuro colleague.

This happened the day after the event in Asagaya Loft at the end of last year. He was inside one of the cars on the first departure of the Yamanote Line. Whether it was normal fatigue, or a sense of calm from welcoming the new year, before he knew it he had dozed off. When he suddenly opened his eyes, there was a familiar man sitting in the seat across from him...

Long boots, black skinny pants. Long black hair, black sunglasses. And on his middle finger, a Diamante armour ring. Yes, it seemed to be me, who he had seen at the event the day before... Just one thing was different, the jacket he was wearing was red.

Although he thought it was suspicious, that hairstyle resembled mine too much, and many times he was about to call out but hesitated. Then "I" got out of the train at Takadanobaba Station.

When I heard the story from him later on, he made sure many times, but the real "me" was at home in bed at that time, and I hadn't set foot in Takadanobaba in many years... Eventually we laughed at the story, but along with the clothes and physical appearance, the person resembled me so much that even the ring was basically the same. It was likely that he'd encountered someone who knew about me, however much he knew...

Although I felt a chill, I knew in my heart that it was a good thing I hadn't observed him myself...

<Coach's Praise>
A red jacket? Was he not a musician but a... magician? When I encountered this story, I was always wracking my brain a little. You stipulated "doppelganger" in the title, but to say it plainly you could use another word, "Ikiryou." Whether it was the eyewitness who said it, or the writer who decided it, I often see both the German word and the Japanese word in ghost stories. Is this the same thing called by two different names? Or are they different with mixed truths, so that nobody knows how to distinguish between them? These words are terribly unclear how to be used in text. By the way, Isshi, isn't the "Indirect" of this title a little bit peculiar?

Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro: 06. "Merhaba..." / 06. "Hello..."

06. "Merhaba..."

Riiiiiing, riiiing, riiiing. Click.
Telefonun ahizesi kaldırıldığında bir ses vardı ve bir süre sonra ses tamamen kesildi. Sonra kız, başka bir kızın mırıltılı sesini işitti;
"Merhaba...?"
"Merhaba?

<Koç'un Aydınlatması>

English:

A story I heard from a female fan.
One day, a girl who worked part time at a certain restaurant felt in poor health as soon as she woke up, and reluctantly called her store to request the day off. Riiiing, riiiing, riiiing. Click.
There was a sound of the phone being picked up, and for a while no sound at all, then she heard a girl's voice mumble "Hello...?"
"Hello? Um, excuse me... I'm very sorry for the trouble, but I woke up with a fever, so might I be excused for today please?"
............
There was no reply......
"Hello?Can you hear me? I'm really sorry..."
When she said that again, clunk. The telephone was hung up on the other side.

She called back many times after that, but when she eventually got through, thirty minutes had passed since the first time she called.
"Hello, I mentioned it just a while ago, but may I be excused today?"
"What's the matter? A while ago?? But I just got here? Who answered the phone?"
As he mentioned it, she didn't recognize the voice of the girl who answered the phone at first...
"Eh, well, a while ago someone answered and just said Hello..."
"Are you sure it wasn't the wrong number? Anyway it's okay, I understand. Be careful, okay?"
"That's right, it must've been the wrong number..."
She thought that, but when she checked the history of sent calls, it only displayed her workplace's number before switching over to yesterday's records.

To this day she doesn't know whose voice that was, and she's still working there now...

<Coach's Illumination>
Comparatively speaking, Isshi. Writing out the sound of a phone call gives it your own essence, but since you put the call sound and the strange female voice all in one set of brackets, we're cut off from the fact that the sound is a sound and the voice is a voice. It's often said that "Strangeness" is the leading role in a ghost story. In this case, you shouldn't be covering over that voice, right?

Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro: 05. "Şimdi!!" / 05. "Now!!"

<Koç'un İğnelemesi>

English:

A family story.

A family of five, both parents and three sisters who were very close, set out for Izu. The stopover point was a traditional inn that was famous in their hometown.

One room was assigned to the parents, and the three sisters all shared a room. For the first time in a while, the family could enjoy walking around, using the hot springs, and eating in privacy. By nightfall they were pleasantly chatting in the parents' room, and time passed in the blink of an eye. The parents said it was time for bed so they wouldn't be exhausted in the daytime, so the sisters returned to their own room, but they still hadn't chatted enough. That being the case, they all continued talking as usual while drinking sake.

They even forgot time was passing, and without anyone noticing, it had turned 2 o'clock in the late night. Since it would be a trying morning as it was, one of the sisters suggested they should go to bed already, and turned out the light. Three of them immediately laid down in bed, but after some more time had passed, the three sisters simultaneously flipped up their futon cover.

The eldest girl said, "Just now, I had sleep paralysis!!"
The middle girl said, "Just now, that screen opened and shut by itself!!"
The youngest girl said, "Just now, I heard a man's voice right at my ear!!"

The sisters each had different reasons for waking up, but there was one thing in common with all of them. Just before they all woke up, someone had straddled their futon...

Excited by this first experience, the three sisters talked all night long until morning came again.

<Coach's Pointer>
You noticed at the fifth story that you need titles, didn't you, Isshi. By the way, when you're collecting stories, or should I say writing a scary story from someone else's experience, there's something you mustn't forget. That's the "point of view." If you get a story that involves several people, who do you hear it from? I'd like for you to clarify that. Also, it's painful that you made the greatest part, the experience that "someone straddled their futons" into an after note. It's even more painful that all of them could've fully recovered from this, it just doesn't have "Isshi-ness."

Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro: 04. (İsimsiz) / 04. (Untitled)

 04. (Untitled)

"Ah, ehmm, ş-şey, şu an temizlikte, üzgünüm. " dedi zayıf, kaçamak bir cevap vererek.

Şans eseri, içimde bir sezgi pırıltısı belirdi. Birden bire cevabı yapıştırmıştım. "Yakında çıkarlar mı?" dedim ama sonra "Eh! Nereden biliyorsun?

<Koç'un İsteği>

Yoksa o mu!?

English:

A story of my neighborhood convenience store.
At that convenience store, there's only one day when they don't allow use of the toilet.

I often go shopping when I'm awake at 4 AM in the night, but at that time the "toilet cleaning" plate is always hanging... However, although it seems like it's being cleaned, the light is never on; it's pitch black and showing no sign of a person being inside.

I thought it was suspicious, so I tried asking the clerk at the register. "Why can't we use the toilet at this time?"
Then the clerk was surprised and took a moment to gather herself. "Ah, err, w-well, it's being cleaned, I'm sorry," she said, giving a poor evasive response.

By some chance, this made my intuition flash. I tried lightly retorting by saying something like "Might they be out soon?" but then I was asked "Eh! How do you know? Have you looked?"
Still... on the condition that I absolutely wouldn't reveal the store name, that clerk told me the truth of the situation.

She said that around that time, when the door is opened, the face reflected in the mirror near the washbasin shows a clearly different expression than her own face... once it was laughing, once it was crying, and sometimes, when she looks into the mirror, the clerk can see her back reflected there...

Next time I too want to take a chance, and try standing in front of that mirror.

<Coach's Request>
That's an unusual time for cleaning the toilet in a convenience store. Furthermore, Isshi, you have keen powers of observation to notice the light in the small window when the "cleaning" plate is hanging on the door.

I would think that your intuition flashed when you "thought it was suspicious" but your delighted face when your intuition hits is coming to my mind...

But since you didn't creep in and stand in front of the mirror, were you told by the clerk "That guest is dangerous"? A battle in a convenience store that's open at 4 in the morning... I would've liked to see that. Incidentally, if it's a local convenience store, is it that one? Or is it that one?!

Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro: 03. (İsimsiz) / 03. (Untitled)

<Koç'un Kafasını Karıştıran Şey>

English:

This is an incident from a certain band's live.

During a violent tune, the tension of the spectators had reached its climax. A girl who was headbanging, violently swinging her head, knocked her head against someone else's with all her force and fainted. Her head cracked open and a large amount of blood was spilling out. In response to that terrible spectacle, some of the nearby guests vomited, some ran away, and some even swooned. The live was interrupted so that the staff could quickly call an ambulance, but since the girl's eyes were rolled back, all that could be seen was a sea of blood. Everyone thought there might be no way to help...

Nevertheless, after around ten minutes, the girl suddenly regained her natural strength, and what's more, she started taking off the clothes she was wearing where she was. The flustered staff hurried to cover her up with towels and handcloths, but since the stream of blood continued to overflow and her eyes weren't fully open, it seemed like she wasn't fully conscious. When the girl had shaken free from all the hands around her and taken everything off, she collapsed again.

The ambulance finally arrived on the scene, and as things were it was certain that she'd be headed for the intensive care unit. But when the staff, who had seen that strange behaviour before their own eyes, explained the facts of the situation to the doctor, it seemed that... when humans are confronted with death they do such things because of instinctual reasons.

I don't know what happened to that girl after all of that, but I can only pray that she was okay...

<Coach's Perplexity>
...Hey Isshi, this is strange... isn't it? This incident... whether or not any part of it still remains... Ahh, speaking of strangeness I think this is a strange tale, but if pushed I'd have to say that it also seems like a tale of human mystery, doesn't it?

Well, the climax of your story is "Her eyes weren't fully open" but it seems to me like you come to this extremely important point too soon. Also, "cracked open" is imperfect as an explanation. We don't really know what kind of state she was in. I think you could at least use an expression such as "cut" or "split." Because the guests around her probably weren't wearing iron helmets right?

Incidentally, you didn't fill out the details of the ending. It doesn't seem very Isshi-like.

168'in Aoi'si, Aoi'nin 168'i, bu projeye katıldığımda, bununla gerçekten gurur duydum!

<Koç'un Dileği>

Bilmek istiyorum...

It happened just a few days ago.

Around 2 in the morning, I left my house to go to the local convenience store. The pole lights were sparse, because naturally there'd be few people walking about. I was walking leisurely, and just ahead of me there was a businessman wearing a suit and carrying a bag under his arm.

Huh? There was something strange...
Just before we passed by each other, I instinctively stopped. That person was dressed normally for sure, but his face was pitch black as though painted with shoe polish. No, it was even blacker than that.

I promptly looked back, and that man was walking on nonchalantly.
"What was that? Did I see him wrong?" is what I was thinking.

Even so, I passed by that man once more on the day I'm writing this... and I noticed something. I never hear any footsteps. I have a conviction of sorts, that I don't think I should pursue that man and try to see him again...

<Coach's Wish>
It looks like you left out the ending on purpose, Isshi. What kind of conviction do you mean when you said "I have a conviction of sorts"? That's something I desperately want to know, but what's even more important than that, is your confirmation. I don't think people who like strangeness encounter a chance like this very often. Here you say that if you were to pursue him you wouldn't see his face again. But surely if it was his usual face, he'd say "Huh? Is there something on me?" Incidentally, what were the eyes like in that black face? If they were black, were they black enough that the white was prominent? You must have seen them for sure. I want to know...

Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro: 01. (İsimsiz) / 01. (Untitled)

<Koç'tan bir kelime>

English:

For the first memorable story, I suppose I'll start with this.

It was during rainy season a few years ago.

I was becoming worn down and tired during recording, but since I didn't make much progress with my work I thought I'd continue working from home after I left the studio. As soon as I went into my work room on the second floor, I put down my bag and sat at the desk. Then I suddenly had to go to the toilet, so I descended to the first floor and went into the restroom as I was.

When I was done, I went back up to the second floor and was about to sit in my chair. My eyes became fixed on something in the center of the desk. It was an unopened beer can. I timidly felt it, and it was icy cool to the touch. I instantly wondered if someone might have invaded my house, so I went around to check on everyone. However, none of the rooms were unlocked and no windows were broken. In the end, there was nothing else odd about the situation.

That day is still a mystery to me...

<A word from Coach>
That's amazing... Isshi, was that beer a treasured can remaining in your fridge? Or maybe the ice cold feeling came from somewhere else? Of course, it was a long-awaited kindness so you drank it, didn't you?

Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro [音怪 一志耳袋] Prolog / Onkai Isshi Mimibukuro [音怪 一志耳袋] Prologue

English:

Prologue - Part One

It's nice to meet everyone for the first time. I'm Isshi, and with my Coach's favour I've been allowed to put my serial stories here. Now, on the first night, I want to give a self introduction and talk about my meeting with Coach, and write a little about the goal of my stories.

I think some of you may already know, but the truth is that I'm a musician. (laughs) And for quite a while I've been doing the vocals in a band called Kagrra. Nevertheless, with an intense love for natural ghost stories and unconventional romance, I started an irregular talk live called "Isshi Mimibukuro" along with my Coach. To tell you the truth, the person I've been calling 'Coach' for some time is the author of "Shin Mimibukuro," Kihara Hirokatsu. As well as my teacher he's like a hero and a father to me, and my Coach for ghost stories. It was more than 10 years ago from now, when I met with the ghastly blue "Shin Mimibukuro~dai ichi yoru~" and because of that book, my life was changed. From the time I was young I adored strange stories, and having read all of those I could get my hands on, I was often badgering the adults and friends around me with scary talk, but eventually my stories had poor development, weak credibility, or lack of surprise, so before I knew it they were numb to fear. How could that be? "Shin Mimibukuro" had those stories and fresh persuasive power, so in the end it couldn't be helped and my frozen mind was splendidly thawed out. After that there was a huge change. While I was reading story by story I started having a particular interest in my Coach as an author, just like a little girl falling in love. Dreaming that I'd meet my Coach someday, I endeavored to work hard in music activities as well as collecting and writing ghost stories.

Prologue - Part Two

Around two or three years after Kagrra began, I heard of a talk live called "Shin Mimibukuro" at the talk livehouse called Shinjuku Loft Plus One. I wanted to go no matter what so I was searching for tickets, but at that time it was very popular and I couldn't get one. I was disheartened, but a kind person handed me a ticket and finally my heart's desire was reached: to see talk live debut of Shin Mimibukuro. But then, had to do a photoshoot on the morning of the next day so I reluctantly headed home, and started thinking back to the heaps of Shin Mimibukuro goods that I had bought. (laughs)

And since I'm a man of immediate action, it occurred to me before long, "I want to do a ghost story live on my own!!" So I told our band leader Izumi and got him involved, and we started an event called "Kaidan Kidan" at the same venue. All five of the events were completed under that same name, and at most were held twice a year, so that in the end it took four years by the time we approached the fifth event. But at that fifth and final event, it worked out that my Coach appeared as a guest. At that time, I certainly wasn't very good, in fact I was a complete novice at telling ghost stories, but I remember that listening to my Coach's skill with storytelling gave me goosebumps and made me break into a grin. (laughs) So from that time on I aspired to be a serious writer, and on that stage I forcibly volunteered myself as an apprentice to my Coach. And having that bond, the two of us were able to begin events called "Isshi Mimibukuro."

Prologue - Part Three

Well, speaking of that "Isshi Mimibukuro", certainly it follows in the footsteps of the original "Shin Mimibukuro" but still my Coach's power was amazing and all of the tickets of the first night sold out instantly. It was becoming an event that boasted of not only one but two popular figures, and the ghost stories go without saying, as well as a chat between my coach and I? It was interesting how the wonder of the talkshow grew more and more. And another happy thing, it seemed that Kagrra fans were now buying my Coach's books. Recently I'd been viewing the loss of interest in reading as a problem and it seemed like we could create quite a stir for all of the fans with our talk of ghost stories and our talk of novels. And so, on that stage, I pleaded with my Coach, "Please let me do a theme song for Shin Mimibukuro!!" And my coach would let that long-cherished dream come true!! It wasn't just about ghost stories, but with the realization of a collaboration of music and Shin Mimibukuro, I had reached the height of my deep emotion.

Prologue - Part Four

We were very busy here and there, I was meeting various people along with Coach, and I was even able to meet Kyogoku Natsuhiko. And what surprised me even more than that, was that there were Kagrra, songs on Kyogoku-sensei's iPod! My body went numb when he said to me, "Oh, this? Yes, I listen to it. Best regards from now on." And recently we were even able to go to a remote spirit spot with the broadcasting force of Captain Matsuzawa from UTB. It was a location we've been to for the past three times, and without fail we captured voices and strange photos. (laughs) Those kind of sensations help what I'm doing with Isshi Mimibukuro, and ghost stories related to music. I think I'd like to write "Onkai," so I hope you'll ask for it!!
